Description

Mexican Folk Art Yellow-Painted Pine Work Table

Decorators, prop stylists, and folk furniture collectors know exactly what they're looking at here: a hard-used Mexican country table that has earned every layer of paint on its skin. The plank top carries a vivid hand-painted yellow finish — laid over earlier green and cream coats that bleed through wherever the surface has flaked back to bare wood — creating the kind of chromatic depth that no artificially distressed piece ever achieves. Four square-tapered legs are joined by a full H-stretcher close to the floor, and a single apron drawer slides on simple side-runners and retains its original small brass knob. The drawer box itself is unpainted pine.

Construction is square-nailed and pegged throughout, with through-peg holes reading plainly across the apron rails. The underside is hand-inked "Hecho en Mexico" in a loose brushed script — an honest provenance note that places it squarely in the tradition of Mexican artisan furniture long traded across the border into New Mexico and the El Paso corridor. The worn legs, layered overpaint, and decades of working surface are the whole point; this table reads as a found object and functions as one.

CONDITION

Fair. Heavy scuffing, paint loss, and fading throughout, with dings, dents, and age-appropriate wear across the top, apron, and all four legs. The frame is currently wobbly and will require reinforcement before use. Drawer operates and retains its brass knob.
