Gorham Chantilly Sterling Silver Condiment Spoon, Pat. 1895
A specialty serving piece in Gorham's Chantilly pattern, first patented in 1895 and among the most continuously produced flatware patterns in American silver history. At 4½ inches with a notably deep, wide oval bowl and a weight of 21.6 grams, this piece sits in the mustard or condiment spoon range — short-handled, sized for a condiment pot rather than a place setting. The Chantilly handle carries the full ornamental program: flowing C-scroll shoulders, foliate crest at the terminal, and the characteristic beaded drop where handle meets bowl. The pattern relief remains sharply defined throughout the handle's length, with the scrollwork at both the shoulder and crest retaining strong edge definition.
Struck on the reverse with the Gorham lion-anchor-G maker's mark, STERLING, and PAT 95, exactly as documented in the supplemental reference image. The bowl interior carries a warm gilt-toned patina from natural oxidation of the sterling — characteristic of unpolished Chantilly pieces and easily reversed with a light hand. Chantilly has been in continuous production since its 1895 introduction, designed by William Christmas Codman; period examples with this depth of surface age and intact relief are the ones with real character.
CONDITION
Good. Overall tarnish throughout; the bowl interior shows surface scratching consistent with use alongside the warm oxidized patina noted above. Pattern detail on the handle remains crisp and well-defined. We'll leave the polishing to you.
