British Colonial Ebonized Four-Poster Canopy Bed, Queen — Solid Wood
A four-poster tester bed in the British Colonial / West Indies manner, finished in ebonized black with a high-gloss surface. The frame is built of solid wood with boldly turned and tapered posts, urn-form finials at each corner, and an open slatted canopy frame above. The arched headboard centers an upholstered panel in a cane-emulating fabric framed in shaped ebonized wood with a broken-pediment crest and a turned central finial, the panel edged in nailhead trim. A turned spindle stretcher spans the footboard.
The style draws on 19th-century colonial bedsteads adapted for warm climates — the tall tester designed to carry mosquito netting or fabric drapery. The ebonized lacquer treatment gives a more contemporary, decorator-friendly read suited to a transitional or globally-styled bedroom. The lot includes the four posts, canopy frame, headboard, footboard, side rails, and pine support slats.
CONDITION
Good overall. Finish wear and loss throughout, including chips to the turned rings and posts exposing bare wood, and scattered surface scratches; isolated rust spots present at metal hardware on the posts and stretcher. The front right post is wobbly, and the headboard fabric shows an isolated area of wear.
