Description

Trek 500 Series Reynolds Steel Road Bike w/ Campagnolo, 23" — 1985

Black lugged-steel road bike from Trek's "500 Series," built in Waterloo, Wisconsin during the company's formative US-manufacturing era. The frame carries a factory sticker confirming TI Reynolds Limited, England double-butted tubing — the quality marker that separated these mid-tier builds from imported entry-level models. Round-tube lugged construction, black with red pinstripe graphics and the script "500 Series" decal on the top tube. The serial number stamped on the bottom bracket shell (205546) places serialization in the 1985 production window per Trek's documented run journal.

This example wears an atypical, desirable component mix: a Campagnolo crankset marked "Brev. Campagnolo" on the chainring, a Campagnolo rear derailleur, and a Belleri France "Custom BF" St. Etienne stem. Wheels are Gemini Forté alloy rims laced to Forté hubs, shod with Vittoria Action HSD 700×23c tires. The saddle is a Flite Pro SLX Carbon. It comes as a complete, ready-to-ride configuration with rear rack, a Vetta cycle computer, a Topeak Mini Master Blaster pump, a Nashbar handlebar bag, a Cateye computer mount, and Presta valve adapters — an 18-speed setup that broadens appeal beyond pure collectors to retro and randonneur riders.

History

Trek's 500 Series occupied the middle of the company's road lineup during the early-to-mid 1980s, when frames were still hand-built domestically in Wisconsin. The use of TI Reynolds double-butted tubing was a deliberate step up in ride quality and durability. The Italian Campagnolo drivetrain and French Belleri stem reflect the period-correct European component sourcing typical of serious amateur builds — an owner who upgraded past the stock spec.

Inclusions
  • Trek 500 Series bicycle as configured
  • Rear cargo rack
  • Vetta cycle computer (bar-mounted)
  • Topeak Mini Master Blaster frame pump
  • Nashbar handlebar bag
  • Cateye computer mount

CONDITION

Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Frame shows scratches and scuffing to the finish; a rub-through scuff at the top tube is present. Drivetrain and component hardware show surface rust and oxidation, particularly around the chainrings, derailleur, and hub. No remarkable structural damage. Bar tape is discolored with use.
