Clara Gachupin Jemez Pueblo Polychrome Seed Jar — Microfine Geometric Banding
A polychrome jar by Clara Gachupin of Jemez Pueblo, New Mexico, signed on the underside "Clara Gachupin / Jemez Pue. / N.M." The form rises from a buff-slipped lower body to a tall, asymmetrically cut neck — the rim deliberately shaped into a sweeping diagonal and outlined in black with a stepped, terraced motif that reads as a cloud or mountain device. Around the shoulder runs a dense band of interlocking circle-and-petal lattice in terracotta, gray, cream, and black, framed top and bottom by narrow red bands.
The shoulder banding is the technical heart of the piece: hundreds of hand-painted lens-shaped petals knit into a continuous rosette grid over a finely hatched ground, the kind of microfine brushwork that defines the best of the Jemez tradition. Gachupin works within a lineage of Jemez potters known for tightly controlled geometric fields, and the sculptural cut rim here gives the jar a contemporary profile while keeping its painted vocabulary rooted in Pueblo design.
Authenticity
Signed on the base "Clara Gachupin / Jemez Pue. / N.M." (see supplemental reference images of the underside). Attributed to Clara Gachupin of Jemez Pueblo on the basis of this signature.
CONDITION
Good. Minor shelf wear and some finish loss to the black rim banding, with scattered flaking along the painted rim line. Painted shoulder band is crisp and intact.
