Description

Japanese Ginbari Cloisonné Akasuke Vase, Roses on Pigeon-Blood Red — Signed

A single ovoid baluster vase in the akasuke (transparent red) tradition of Japanese cloisonné, the deep pigeon-blood ground laid over a worked metal body so that light catches the underlying ginbari guilloché — a stippled, hammered foil pattern that shimmers through the translucent enamel. Across the front, a spray of full-blown roses in pink, crimson, and pale apricot rises from dark thorned canes, the petals shaded from white edge to saturated heart and the foliage worked in graduated greens. Fine silver wire defines every petal and leaf. The mouth is finished with a gilt rim and the foot with a white-metal band.

The technique is associated with the great Nagoya and Andō workshops of the late Meiji through Shōwa periods, when transparent enamel over a chased silver or copper armature was pushed to its decorative peak. The base carries an impressed maker's mark visible in the supplemental reference image but not yet attributed to a specific workshop; the rose subject and pigeon-blood ground are consistent with export wares of the early-to-mid 20th century. Note: this lot is a single vase; the paired and grouped vases shown in several reference images are comparables only and are not included.

Significance & Rarity

Akasuke over ginbari is among the more technically demanding of the Japanese enamel methods — the red must fire clear and even to let the foil read, with no clouding or pinholing across a curved body. Well-executed examples with a clean rose composition and an intact silver foot band remain sought after by enamel collectors.

CONDITION

Excellent, no damage. Enamel surface is bright and unbroken with the ginbari pattern reading clearly through the red ground. Gilt rim and white-metal foot band intact.
