Gorham "Medallion" Pattern Sterling Goblets, Providence, c. 1861–68 — Pair
A matched pair of Gorham Manufacturing Co. sterling silver goblets in the early "Medallion" pattern, Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1861–1868. Each rises from a trumpet foot through a baluster stem to a full spherical bowl, the cup encircled by a horizontal band of lance and drop-point gadrooning. At the front of each band sits a high-relief applied classical portrait medallion drawn from antique numismatic imagery — one a helmeted female figure in the manner of Roma or Minerva, the other a laureate male head reading as Apollo or Alexander. The bases carry Gorham's lion / anchor / G mark together with the model number 211.
The reverse of each bowl is engraved with a family armorial: a castle tower issuing flames from its base, crisp and intact, documenting period ownership. Gorham introduced Medallion around 1861, riding the Neoclassical revival that mined Greek and Roman coinage for ornament; the pattern ran through the 1860s and is actively sought by pattern completists and Victorian silver collectors. Matched pairs retaining original engraving command a consistent premium over singles at auction.
CONDITION
Good. Both goblets present well, with surface scratching and tarnish. The applied coin medallions and gadrooned bands remain sharp, and the engraved armorials are crisp. We'll leave the polishing to you.
