Afghan Maimana-Style Wool Kilim, Boxed Geometric Panels, Third Quarter 20th C.
Handwoven Afghan kilim in the flat-weave tribal tradition, built from wool decorative wefting on wool warps. The field is organized into a grid of boxed panels — hooked medallions, stepped crosses, diamond rosettes, and dotted quatrefoils — set against a rust-and-terracotta ground with borders of dark zigzag latch-hooks. Small accents in indigo, olive, cream, and aubergine punctuate the palette. Ends finish in the dark banded skirt and warp-fringe typical of the form.
Woven in the third quarter of the 20th century, the piece carries the dense small-scale motif vocabulary associated with northern Afghan village and nomadic weaving. The color range comes entirely from the wool itself and its dyes, and the slightly irregular drawing across panels marks it as a hand-loomed, non-commercial weaving rather than a workshop reproduction.
CONDITION
Fair. The rug is faded overall with UV damage heavier to one side, and shows numerous holes and areas of loss through the field. Wear to the selvedge with chunks missing along one edge, visible tears in some areas, and general signs of use throughout. Sold in as-found, decorative-or-project condition; please review all photos for condition and detail.
