Description

WM Rogers & Son "AA" State Souvenir Silverplate Spoons, Set of 11

A group of eleven American state souvenir spoons by WM Rogers & Son, each marked "AA" on the reverse. The handles are die-struck with a spread-winged eagle finial above a banner bearing the state name, a state seal or coat of arms in relief, and acanthus-and-wheat ornament running down the shaft. States represented include Virginia, Vermont, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Florida, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Maine, each with its motto — "Sic Semper Tyrannis," "Freedom and Unity," "National Union," "Tuebor," and others — cast beneath the seal.

Silverplate souvenir spoons of this type were mass-produced during the collecting craze that ran from the 1890s through the early twentieth century, when travelers and enthusiasts assembled full state sets. The eagle-topped "state seal" pattern was among the most popular formats WM Rogers & Son offered. One reference spoon shows the "PAT. FEB. 23, 1915" mark on the reverse, dating the pattern to the mid-1910s.

CONDITION

Good overall. Surfaces carry tarnish and toning throughout, with one bowl showing heavier iridescent oxidation and light scattered scratching to several bowls. We'll leave the polishing to you.
