Description

Painted Hide & Wood Pueblo-Style Drum with Beater

Some objects earn their place in a room without explanation. This small cylindrical drum is one of them — the kind of thing that lands on a cabin shelf or a mantle and immediately reads as the most interesting object in the space. Two rawhide heads pull taut over a fabric-wrapped barrel, held in tension by a continuous hide lacing that zig-zags full-length and cinches into a scalloped edge at each end. The body is printed with a repeating geometric pattern — stepped triangles, diamond-and-cross medallions, bow-tie bands — layered in forest green, terracotta, sky blue, and warm cream. A braided carry-loop hangs from one side. The whole thing has exactly the kind of visual weight a room built around wood, leather, and natural materials is calling for.

The beater is its own small pleasure — a naturally curved branch with a pale striped grain running up the upper half, topped with a round suede head wrapped and bound with a leather tie. It leans against the drum like it was made to. Whether this ends up in a mountain cabin, a reading room, or anchoring a gallery wall of folk art and textiles, it brings something a mass-produced piece simply can't: the honest presence of real hide, real wood, and a craft tradition with deep roots in the Rio Grande valley.

CONDITION

Good. Both heads are intact with no tears or damage, and the lacing holds firm tension throughout. Light handling wear and minor soiling to the hide consistent with age and use.
