Large Antique Terracotta Twin-Handled Storage Jar, Unmarked
A substantial wheel-thrown storage jar in unglazed red-firing earthenware, with a full ovoid body, broad sloping shoulder, and stepped cylindrical neck terminating in a rolled rim. Two compact loop handles flank the neck at the shoulder join. An applied rope-twist band with a repeating impressed chevron pattern encircles the neck-to-shoulder transition; a second finer impressed band runs just below it. Wheel-throwing rings mark the body throughout. The fully rounded base indicates the jar was made to rest in a sand bed or purpose-built cradle rather than stand independently.
Large unglazed terracotta storage jars of this general form — ovoid body, twin loop handles, narrow evaporation-slowing neck, impressed decorative shoulder band — were produced widely across multiple folk-ceramic traditions for storage of grain, oil, water, and other goods. The mineral encrustation, lime deposits, and darkening concentrated at the shoulder and neck are consistent with extended working use. The jar is unmarked and carries no maker's attribution or confirmed geographic origin.
CONDITION
Good. Chipping and minor imperfections throughout, with losses to the rim edge and localized chips at the shoulder-handle joins. Heavy mineral encrustation, lime deposits, and darkening across the shoulder and neck are consistent with age and use. Body is intact and structurally stable.
