Antique Chinese Elm Two-Drawer Cabinet with Cloud-Carved Spandrels, c. 1900
A compact Chinese elm side cabinet in a warm two-tone finish — a reddish frame set against honey-toned door panels and drawer faces. The upper register holds two dovetailed drawers fitted with original brass hardware: a rectangular lock plate with swing bail on the left, a chrysanthemum-backed ring pull on the right. Below, a pair of framed and floating-panel doors open on a butterfly-style brass lock plate with double ring pulls. Carved cloud-scroll spandrels soften the transitions at the drawer rail and base stretcher, and the feet turn out in a subtle hoof profile.
Built with mortise-and-tenon joinery throughout, the cabinet is solid elm identified by staff, with a maker's mark inked on the underside stretcher (shown in reference photos). The interior holds a removable functional shelf. A construction and provenance note dates the piece to approximately 1900. Cabinets of this scale served bedside and entry use in northern Chinese households, valued for the honest grain of the wood and the restraint of the joinery over applied ornament.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Paint and lacquer chipping to the drawer interiors and door backs; the original lock mechanism has been removed and a functional shelf added during past restoration. Structure is sturdy and joinery remains sound.
