Painted Beadboard Two-Door Cupboard with Fixed Shelves, Early 20th C.
A country storage cupboard built of solid wood with beadboard construction throughout — vertical bead paneling on both doors and sides, over a two-panel batten-braced case. The pair of doors are hung on iron butterfly hinges and secured by a surface-mount iron latch, all painted over in the same soft blush-tan that covers the exterior. The plank top retains a darker brown finish, worn and stained from long use. Inside, two fixed Masonite shelves divide the interior into three graduated bays, backed by paneled beadboard.
Utility pieces like this served pantries, mudrooms, and back porches, painted and repainted to match whatever room they landed in. This one carries a heavily weathered coat with the crackle, chipping, and paint loss earned across decades — an honest working cupboard rather than a refinished showpiece. Unmarked as to maker.
CONDITION
Fair and structurally sturdy. The painted surfaces show significant finish wear and loss, crackling, chips, scratches, and scuffing throughout — most pronounced along the lower panels and one side. The top plank shows discoloration and staining. Doors operate on their original iron hardware.
