Description

STS-41D "Maiden Flight of Discovery" Cachet Cover Signed by Astronaut Ken

A commemorative air mail cover marking the maiden flight of Space Shuttle Discovery, STS-41D, prepared with a Grumman Aerospace Corporation cachet honoring the Bethpage, New York plant as "Builder of the Shuttle Wing." The envelope carries a 20¢ Nikola Tesla "Induction Motor" stamp tied by twin Bethpage, NY USPO circular datestamps of June 26, 1984. Bold rubber-stamped cachets read "MAIDEN FLIGHT OF DISCOVERY STS-41D" in maroon and the Grumman corporate lines in purple.

The cover is boldly signed in black ink by Ken Cameron, annotated "Space Shuttle Pilot." Cameron flew as a NASA astronaut on four Shuttle missions between 1991 and 1996, commanding STS-56 and STS-74, and piloting STS-37. STS-41D itself launched Discovery on its first voyage in August 1984, deploying three communications satellites during the orbiter's debut. The Grumman connection ties this piece to Long Island's aerospace legacy, where the company fabricated the Shuttle's wing structures. A Certificate of Authenticity from Mesilla Valley Estate Sales accompanies the lot.

CONDITION

Very Good. Clean cachets and crisp cancellations with a bold, legible autograph. Minor handling to the envelope surface; corners sound. Reverse is unmarked.
