STS-5 Columbia Space Shuttle Cover Signed by Astronaut William B. Lenoir, 1982
An air mail commemorative cover honoring the maiden operational flight of Space Shuttle Columbia (Orbiter 102), boldly signed in blue ink by mission specialist William B. Lenoir. The cover carries a Merritt Island, FL cancellation dated Nov 11, 1982 — the day before the STS-5 launch — with a 20¢ Flag Over Supreme Court definitive stamp and the NASA Mobile Station / Ponce de Leon Station cachet at upper left.
The face is dressed with three cachets: the blue "Columbia" Space Shuttle Orbiter 102 launch illustration, and a red star-and-shuttle emblem listing the full STS-5 crew — Commander Vance D. Brand, Pilot Robert F. Overmyer, and Specialists Joseph P. Allen and William B. Lenoir. STS-5 was the first fully operational Shuttle mission, deploying two commercial communications satellites and closing out the orbiter's test phase. Lenoir's clean, bold signature crosses the lower half of the envelope beneath the crew cachet. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales.
CONDITION
Very Good. Clean cachets and a crisp, high-contrast Lenoir signature; postmark and stamp intact. Light handling to the edges and faint offset ink transfer on the reverse from the cancellation. Envelope is unaddressed and sealed.
