Description

Marc Garneau Signed STS 41-G Challenger Cachet Cover — Kennedy Space Center 1984

Commemorative first-day-style cachet cover for Space Shuttle mission STS 41-G, flown aboard Challenger in October 1984, boldly signed in black ink by Marc Garneau, Canadian Astronaut — the first Canadian to fly in space. The cover carries the full 41-G crew emblem in color at left, listing Crippen, McBride, Sullivan, Leestma, Ride, Garneau, and Scully-Power, with a USA 20c Flag Over Supreme Court stamp tied by a Kennedy Space Center, FL 32815 postmark dated OCT 13 1984, the day the mission returned.

Mission 41-G was the first crew to exceed six members and included Kathryn Sullivan, who performed the first American woman's spacewalk, and Sally Ride on her second flight. Garneau, a payload specialist and later the head of the Canadian Space Agency and a Canadian cabinet minister, inscribed his own descriptor — "Canadian Astronaut" — beneath the signature. An accompanying printed mission card describing the crew emblem, artwork by Patrick Rawlings, is included with the lot.

Significance & Rarity

Garneau's 41-G flight marked Canada's entry into human spaceflight. Covers postmarked at Kennedy Space Center on the mission's return date and signed by the flying astronaut carry both philatelic and space-history appeal, drawing collectors of astronaut autographs and shuttle-era covers alike.

Authenticity

A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Mesilla Valley Estate Sales.

CONDITION

Very Good. Signature is crisp and fully legible; cachet and postmark are clean and well-struck. Minor toning spots to the paper and light handling at the edges; a small pencil notation is present at the lower right of the cover face.
