Hand-Carved Ironwood Eagle on Natural Burl Base
A folk sculpture of a standing eagle carved from a single piece of ironwood, the dense, close-grained hardwood prized by carvers for its weight and durability. The bird stands upright with head raised and hooked beak lifted, its weight resting on carved talons that grip a live-edge burl base left in its natural rough state. The maker worked the plumage with directional gouge strokes down the folded wings and rendered the tail as a long tapering paddle, contrasting the smoothed head and breast against the textured feathers. Inset dark eyes and lightly incised brow lines finish the face.
The undersurface carries a hand-inked notation reading "XIII / P", likely an inventory or collection mark, now heavily faded. The natural weathered patina, the exposed heartwood variation, and the untouched burl pedestal give the piece a rustic-by-design character throughout. A substantial decorative carving with strong grain figure and hand-tool evidence across every surface.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage. Age-appropriate surface checking and a few natural fissures in the base consistent with solid ironwood. The underside ink notation is heavily faded. The carved surfaces show tool marks and grain variation as worked.
