Folk Art Barrel Cactus Sculpture in Salvaged Sheet Iron & Barbed Wire
A freestanding barrel cactus rendered entirely in salvaged metal — radial ribs cut from sheet iron and joined to a circular base, each fin sheathed in twisted galvanized barbed wire that stands in for the plant's areoles and spines. The crown is finished with a spray of cut-iron leaves fanning out from the apex, their edges deliberately jagged. The whole piece has weathered to a deep rust-brown patina from outdoor life, giving it the coloration of a sun-baked desert specimen.
The construction is unmarked and self-taught in character, the kind of yard sculpture that has long been a fixture of borderland and desertmetalwork. The barbed-wire wrap is both structural and decorative, cinching the ribs at intervals with hand-twisted knots. At roughly 13 inches tall it reads as a tabletop or garden accent — heavy enough to hold its footing, small enough to move where wanted.
CONDITION
Good with visible patina and honest signs of outdoor use throughout. Surface rust and pitting across the sheet iron are consistent with weathering and part of the intended aesthetic. No remarkable damage; the barbed-wire wrap remains secure and the piece stands freely on its own base.
