Oak Trestle-Base Side Table with Turned Baluster Supports
A compact oak occasional table in the English trestle idiom, with a rectangular breadboard-end top raised on a pair of turned baluster columns. The columns seat into blocked plinths above shaped, splayed sledge feet, tied by a single flat central stretcher joined through the uprights. Shaped bracket spurs support the top at each end, and the top's molded edge and cleated ends read as period-style joinery. The overall surface carries a warm medium-brown finish with visible grain and honest handling wear.
The form derives from 17th-century refectory and trestle tables, scaled down here for use as a side, hall, or lamp table. Construction is pegged and blocked in the traditional manner; the through-tenoned stretcher and sledge feet give the base stability without an apron. A shrinkage separation runs across the top near one cleated end, consistent with age and seasonal movement in solid oak.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage. Honest surface wear and handling marks throughout the finish; a shrinkage gap is present across the top near one end. Base joinery is stable and the table stands square.
