Antique Terracotta Storage Jar, Pitch-Lined Interior, Lattice Band
A substantial hand-thrown terracotta storage jar in the ovoid form used across the Mediterranean for centuries to store olive oil, wine, and grain. The body rises from a stepped foot ring to a broad rolled rim, with small lug-stub handles at the shoulder and a circumferential band of incised cross-hatch lattice bounded by raised horizontal ridges — a decorative register typical of Iberian, Italian, and North African workshop production. Applied clay bosses, each a dimpled pellet pressed into the leather-hard body before firing, punctuate the upper shoulder; a similar boss appears on the base foot ring. The exterior carries throwing rings, tool marks, surface scratches, and mineral bloom consistent with a vessel that has worked for its keep.
CONDITION
Good and structurally solid throughout. Weathered exterior with surface abrasion, mineral bloom, and lichen-type crust concentrated at the lower body and base; chipping and edge loss at the foot ring and one shoulder area, with a notable gouge at the foot-body junction. Interior pitch lining is intact with patchy surface crazing consistent with age.
