Description

American Country Painted Pine 4-Drawer Chest, Original Surface, c. 1880–1920

There is a whole category of collector who will scroll past a refinished chest without a second glance and stop cold at this one. The surface is the point: cream over green over pink, crackled into a map of every decade this piece lived through, the paint lifting and flaking in the way that cannot be manufactured and cannot be undone. Floral decoupage fragments cling to the sides — a domestic ornament added somewhere in the middle chapters of its life — and the unpainted back reveals honest pine or fir board-and-batten construction, the kind of direct, nailed-together joinery that came out of frontier workshops rather than urban cabinet shops.

The configuration is two small drawers over two full-width drawers, each fitted with added wooden dividers — a period modification that speaks to decades of practical daily use. Hardware is mixed across its life: white ceramic knob pulls on the small top drawers, consistent with late Victorian to Edwardian replacements, and oval pressed-metal cup pulls on the lower drawers, carrying heavy oxidation and old paint overspray that tells you they have been here a long time. The case stands on bracket feet, rides straight-front and square, and remains structurally sturdy. No maker's marks were found.

CONDITION

Good with authentic, age-appropriate wear throughout. The multi-layer paint surface is crackled, chipped, and actively peeling — honest age on a structurally sound case. A component is absent from the upper edge of the second drawer's upper edge.
