Description

Polychromed Resin Christ Child Santo with Gilt Sunburst Halo

A polychromed resin figure of the Christ Child (Niño Jesús), shown in a devotional pose with the right hand raised in blessing and the left extended, palm open. The head turns slightly, framed by dark curls picked out in reddish-brown highlights and crowned with a spiked gilt sunburst halo mounted to a wire stem at the nape. A short draped loincloth in cream with brown-shadowed folds is the figure's only garment; the flesh tones carry a warm ivory glaze throughout. Materials are steel and resin.

The devotional Niño is a fixture of Hispanic Catholic religious imagery, displayed reclining or seated on church altars and home shrines, often dressed in fabric vestments for feast days. This example follows that long tradition of the blessing infant with a radiant halo, its expressive face and gesturing hands intended to draw the eye of the faithful. The halo removes from its slotted mount at the back for storage and transport.

CONDITION

Good. Finish wear and loss throughout, with rubbing to the gilt halo and abrasion to the loincloth folds. Wear to the tips of the fingers and toes exposes darker undertone and small losses at the extremities.
