Gecko & Turtle Wall Plaques, Pair, Great River Co. Terracotta
Pair of round terracotta wall plaques by Great River Co. of Mesilla Park, New Mexico, each rendered in relief and hand-painted in turquoise, coral, pink, purple, and cream over a natural red-clay ground. One depicts a stylized gecko ringed by pink diamond markings; the other a turtle with a patterned shell of triangles and geometric fills. Both carry a sawtooth triangle border and a spattered clay field. The versos are ink-stamped "GREAT RIVER CO. / MESILLA PARK, NM, USA" and impressed at the edge with the maker name and copyright dates — the gecko dated 1996, the turtle 1997. Each is fitted with a wire hanging loop set into the back.
Great River Co. produced cast and hand-finished decorative ceramics in the Mesilla Valley through the 1990s, drawing on regional desert motifs. The gecko and turtle pairing makes a natural matched set for wall display.
CONDITION
Good overall. Paint is bright and intact with minor surface scuffing and light edge wear to the clay. Wire hangers are secure on both.
