E. Ortiz Talavera Hand-Painted Charger, Puebla Mexico — Floral & Cobalt
Hand-painted Talavera charger from Puebla, Mexico, worked in the traditional palette of cobalt blue, yellow-ochre, terracotta, and soft green over a cream tin glaze. The center is anchored by a vertical green-stemmed motif framed with lattice diaper-work, flanked by scrolling cobalt foliage and radiating flower heads at the cardinal points. A wide rim carries a continuous band of teardrop leafage and open blossoms, all bordered in a deep blue lip line. Signed on the reverse E. Ortiz Mex., with the characteristic exposed terracotta foot ring.
Talavera poblana descends from the maiolica traditions Spanish potters carried to Puebla in the sixteenth century, where local clays and the region's cobalt gave the ware its recognizable weight and depth of blue. Each piece is thrown, tin-glazed, and painted freehand, so the slight variation in linework reads as the mark of the hand rather than a flaw. This charger displays well flat or wall-mounted.
CONDITION
Good. Overall crazing throughout the glaze, consistent with the tin-glaze tradition and age. Exposed terracotta foot with minor glaze skips at the rim edge. No chips or cracks noted.
