Hand-Carved Alpine Hunter with Dog, Single-Piece Wood Sculpture
He's mid-stride up a rocky slope, pipe at his lips, pack on his back, rifle slung easy — and his dog is right there, nose tipped up, checking in. The carver pulled all of it from a single solid piece of wood: the hunter, the hound, the fractured stone beneath their feet, the whole moment. That's the commitment that separates a carving like this from a shelf piece. Nothing was assembled. Nothing was glued. The form was already inside the wood; someone just had the patience and the eye to find it.
The detail work earns its reputation: a pleated jacket over a ribbed vest, a pouch with an incised leaf medallion at the belt, laced boots, a corded hat brim, and a fringed knapsack — all rendered with confident, unhurried tool strokes. The faceted, chip-cut base anchors the figure like a mountain ledge. The piece is unmarked, consistent with the decorative figurative carvings produced across Alpine Europe and French-Canadian workshops throughout the twentieth century, where the object itself was the signature.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. Warm, even patina throughout with crisp tool detail retained across the figure and base. Age-appropriate handling wear only.
