Monumental Black-Glazed Stoneware Garden Jar, 43" — Asian Export
A monumental floor-standing storage jar in stoneware, standing 43 inches with a wide rolled rim, ovoid body tapering to a flat base, and two small coiled lug handles at the shoulder. The upper body carries two applied fan-form relief medallions, and the entire exterior wears a high-gloss dark glaze that shifts between deep black and blue-black across its surface. The interior reveals a red-tan clay body.
At 144 pounds and well over three feet tall, it reads as a statement piece — the kind of large glazed jar that anchors an entryway, courtyard, or garden bed. Jars of this scale remain perennially popular across New Mexico for courtyard and portal installation, and this one shows the honest wear of prior outdoor service. Structurally sturdy, with the damage confined to the surface.
CONDITION
Good with an area of damage. A roughly 12" × 1½" area of glaze loss to one side exposes the tan clay body, with an older previous repair present. Scuffing and surface wear throughout consistent with outdoor use. Structurally sturdy.
