Arts & Crafts Quarter-Sawn Oak Slat-Back Rocking Chair, Early 20th Century
An early 20th-century Arts and Crafts rocker built in quarter-sawn oak, showing the ray-fleck figure prized in the Mission idiom across the crest rail, slats, and posts. The tall back carries five vertical slats set beneath a gently arched top rail, flanked by flat, paddle-form arms supported on double-slat sides. Pegged joinery is evident at the arm-to-post connections, and the whole rests on bent oak rockers with rounded return tips.
The drop-in seat is upholstered in a dark oxblood vinyl over a padded frame, secured with round-head tacks along the rear edge. The piece is unmarked, consistent with the many regional and factory workshops producing Mission-style seating in the Gustav Stickley wake. Its scale suits a reading corner or bedroom, and the honeyed oak finish carries an even, warm tone throughout.
CONDITION
Good overall. The oak frame is sound with an even finish and age-appropriate handling wear. There is a small tear to the vinyl seat covering at the bottom left rear, with associated tacking and the burlap underlay exposed at that corner.
