Spencer & Barnes Mahogany Serpentine Dresser with Tilting Mirror, c. 1900
A late Victorian dresser in solid mahogany by The Spencer & Barnes Co. of Benton Harbor, Michigan, a maker known for chamber suits and chiffoniers around the turn of the century. The case carries a serpentine front with two short over one long dovetailed drawer, each fitted with swing bail brass pulls and original brass keyhole escutcheons. Cabriole legs terminate in scrolled feet, and a carved rocaille apron ties the base to the Louis XV–inspired lines above.
The crown is a tilting beveled mirror set in a shaped frame with a carved shell crest and acanthus-scrolled uprights. The paper maker's label survives inside, reading "Manufactured by The Spencer & Barnes Co. — Chamber Suits and Chiffoniers — Benton Harbor, Michigan." A companion of a bedroom era when the dresser-and-mirror pairing anchored the American chamber suite, this piece is a solid-mahogany candidate for refinishing.
CONDITION
Fair, for restoration. Surface shows scratching, chips, scuffing, fading, and finish wear and loss throughout. A piece of the back foot is missing. Drawers are dovetailed and the maker's label remains present inside.
