Talavera Chihuahua & Howling Pupper Pair
A hand-painted Talavera ceramic pair from Mexico, each modeled as a Chihuahua and finished in the tradition's signature majolica glazes. The larger figure sits upright with muzzle raised in a howl, its cobalt-black body covered in polychrome florals — red poppies, blue and green foliage, and a spotted yellow collar. The smaller companion is a seated pup glazed in bright marigold with a floral saddle blanket across its back and expressive painted eyes and whiskers. The howling pup displays the raised white dot work (puntillismo) characteristic of quality Talavera production.
The underside of the larger dog carries a hand-inscribed notation reading "Kris 2015 / Santa Fe Mtn. / DACFRW" along with a retail price marking, confirming a dated 2015 studio piece. Talavera's tin-glazed earthenware tradition traces to 16th-century Puebla, where Spanish and Moorish techniques merged with indigenous clay work; these animal forms carry that lineage into contemporary decorative production. The two figures pair naturally, the seated pup angled toward the howling adult.
CONDITION
Good. The yellow dog has two small chips to one ear. The blue dog shows small chips along the bottom rear edge. Glaze is bright and glossy throughout with no cracks noted.
