Description

Teissedre 1988 Cast Resin Pueblo-Style Storyteller with Twelve Children

A signed Teissedre figurine in the Pueblo Storyteller form: a seated female figure surrounded by roughly a dozen children who cling to her shoulders, lap, and skirts. Painted details include a turquoise-toned heishi necklace with a tab pendant, coral-red robe borders, a swaddled infant in a cradleboard, and a corn-filled pottery bowl with black zigzag banding at her feet. A small brown dog and a napping child round out the scene. The underside is signed Teissedreand dated 1988, with a "Handcrafted in the U.S.A." paper label still affixed to the base.

The Storyteller — a seated figure covered in listening children — originated with Helen Cordero of Cochiti Pueblo in 1964 and became one of the most recognized forms in Pueblo ceramic art. Teissedre, a California studio active through the 1980s and 1990s, adapted the tradition into a commercial decorative format. This example carries an unusually high figure count and dense narrative detail — cradleboard, dog, and corn bowl among them — giving it more visual complexity than the simpler pieces the studio produced.

CONDITION

Very Good with no remarkable damage. Paint remains clean and bright across the many figures, with no notable loss or structural cracking. Cork feet and both maker labels are intact on the base.
