Arts & Crafts Quartersawn Oak Bookstand with Magazine Trough
A narrow freestanding oak bookstand in the Arts & Crafts idiom, its quartersawn oak sides framing four open display shelves above a deep magazine trough at the base. The panels show pronounced medullary ray flake, and both the shaped crest rail and the trough front carry a serpentine scalloped profile. Pierced handhold cutouts flank the top shelf, and a beaded, spool-turned molding runs the full length of both front edges — the decorative touch that gives the piece its character.
Unmarked, the stand reads as an early 20th-century domestic library or hall piece, sized to sit against a wall and hold books above with periodicals below. The graduated shelf depths — a shallower top shelf over deeper lower shelves and the trough — suit it to a mix of contents, from slim volumes to larger folios and magazines.
CONDITION
Good. Age-appropriate wear, scratches, and surface marks throughout the oak. A 7 3/4" section of the beaded edge molding is missing (see reference photos). Joinery remains sound and the stand sits stable.
