Zuni Fetish Bear Carving, Banded Alabaster with Turquoise Eyes
A Zuni stone fetish carved as a standing bear, worked from a warm banded alabaster in layered peach, cream, and charcoal. The natural striations run the full length of the body, and the carver has worked fine incised lines along the flanks and spine to suggest fur texture. The muzzle, brow, and hunched shoulders are rendered with quiet economy — the whole piece fits comfortably in the palm. Maker unmarked; offered as consistent with Zuni fetish tradition.
The eyes are set with two small round turquoise stones, seated at the sockets in a warm gold-toned adhesive. A mouth line and nostril detail are cut at the muzzle. In Zuni tradition, the bear ranks among the most significant of spirit figures — a guardian and healer — and the banded alabaster gives each side a distinct face, the veining shifting as the piece turns in the light.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage. Surface reflects the natural inclusions and veining of the alabaster; turquoise eyes are secure. Age-appropriate handling wear throughout.
