Chon — Graphite Portrait of Two Korean Elders in Conversation
A quiet, unhurried study of two aged figures seated close together in easy exchange, rendered in graphite on canvas panel and signed Chon at lower right. The man wears the wide-brimmed horsehair gat and traditional hanbok of an elder scholar, one hand resting on a bent walking stick; his companion, hair drawn back in a low knot, leans in with a warm, creased smile. The artist works the medium with restraint — dense shading in the hat and folds of cloth, the faces built up through fine, patient line — leaving the canvas ground to carry the light-colored robes.
The intimacy of the pose does the storytelling: two lifetimes of expression captured in the crinkle of eyes and the loose set of hands. Presented under glass in a dark wood frame with a black mat, gilt inner liner, and a decorative brass hanger cast in an openwork longevity motif at the top edge.
CONDITION
Very Good. The drawing surface is clean and stable with strong, unfaded line work; the signature reads clearly at lower right. Frame and glazing are sound with typical light handling wear.
