Description

Ron Rencher "The Tin Roof" Original 1983 Watercolor — Zion Country Barn

A weathered board-and-batten barn stands under a corrugated metal roof, its split-rail corral snaking through sagebrush and pinyon-juniper toward stratified red sandstone canyon walls. This original watercolor on paper by Ron Rencher (b. 1952, St. George, Utah) is signed lower right "Rencher © 1983" and inscribed verso in pencil "Ron Rencher" with the title "The Tin Roof." The scene reads unmistakably as the Zion National Park / Virgin River region of Utah — precisely the terrain Rencher worked through five winters in the early 1980s. It is presented double-matted behind glass in a beveled solid wood frame.

The date places this squarely in Rencher's foundational watercolor period, before his 1987 move to Taos and subsequent shift to oils — the medium in which he built his reputation is captured here at full strength. A penciled "$525" on the backing board reflects original gallery pricing. Rencher was elected to full membership in the Cowboy Artists of America in 2024 and has been a Signature Member of the Plein Air Painters of America since 1998; his work is held by the Las Vegas Art Museum and the Buttram Museum, among others. An early dated canyon-country watercolor carries clear appeal for Utah, New Mexico, and broader Art collectors.

History

Raised on the family ranch in Utah's Pine Valley Mountains, Rencher earned a B.A. in Fine Art from Southern Utah University in 1975 and spent his early career painting the region in watercolor, including extended winter residencies in and around Zion and the Grand Canyon. He studied under Milford Zornes, Ned Jacob, Mark Daily, and Lowell Ellsworth Smith. "The Tin Roof" belongs to this early, watercolor-driven chapter of his output.

CONDITION

Excellent. Colors remain fresh and saturated with no visible fading. Signature confirmed recto and verso; frame and matting present cleanly.
