Description

Karen Muench "Cats for Peace" Original Watercolor Diptych, 2010

A matched pair of original watercolors on paper by Karen Muench, presented together as a diptych in a single frame. The two compositions mirror each other across a shared visual grammar: each cat — one orange, one cobalt blue — reclines atop a rainbow picket fence whose posts are stamped with peace signs, beneath a bold red sun in a sky filled with loose brushed birds. The orange cat wears a fish-charm collar and carries a fish-motif border along its back; the blue cat answers with an orange flower-and-heart chest piece and a curling chain of red hearts trailing along its spine. Both panels are signed "MUENCH" and dated 2010 within the compositions. A printed label affixed to the verso identifies the title as "Cats for Peace" and confirms Karen Muench as the artist.

Muench works in a bold folk idiom — heavy black outlines, saturated primaries, flat pattern-within-pattern — that gives her originals a graphic immediacy her prints and cards can approximate but not replicate. The hand of the brush is present throughout: the uneven wash of the sky, the layered weight of the fence posts, the organic looseness of the bird silhouettes scattered across both skies. The diptych format is deliberate and unified: same horizon line, same red sun, same fence, same sky — two animals, two color worlds, one shared vocabulary of peace signs and birds in flight. Orange and blue are complementary opposites on the color wheel, and Muench uses that tension purposefully, letting fish answer hearts, warm answer cool, without tipping either panel into dominance. The pairing functions as a single coherent statement, not two small works that happen to share a frame. Presented professionally with double matting in red and cream, set behind glass in a matching red wood frame.
