Peruvian Andean Cholita Market Frieze Watercolor on Pig Skin, 2003
A panoramic frieze of stylized Andean market women (cholitas) viewed from behind, seated across a band of burnt-orange earth beneath a range of violet mountains. Each figure wears the layered pollera skirts, braided hair, and bowler or brimmed hats that identify the Quechua and Aymara women vendors of the Peruvian highlands, their backs turned as they face a rising sun. Pottery vessels and a lidded basket punctuate the row, and a lone llama breaks the rhythm at center. The palette is fully saturated — cobalt, saffron, magenta, and violet against the red ground — with fine white line-work detailing the woven textiles.
The work is executed on pig skin (parchment), an uncommon and collectible substrate for this genre that lends the pigment a soft, luminous grain. Signed lower right (signature partially legible) and dated 2003. The subject matter, costume, and pottery forms place this firmly in the Peruvian Cusco/Andean market-scene tradition, a folk art lineage well established since the mid-20th century.
