H. Santibáñez — Andean Women & Moon, Original Gouache
An original gouache on paper by H. Santibáñez, signed lower right and titled "Ecuador" at lower left. Eight Andean women stand in a tight row, seen from behind, wrapped in fringed shawls of saturated color — marigold, rose, cobalt, violet, coral — each crowned with a felt bowler in the manner of highland Ecuadorian and Bolivian dress. Two carry infants bundled against their backs. The figures gather at the edge of a black landmass that falls away across the sheet toward a soft, tonally rendered moon low on the horizon.
The composition trades on contrast: dense, deliberate color in the figures against the vast negative space of untouched paper, the crowd weighted to the left while the moon anchors the right. Santibáñez works the deckle-edged sheet with airbrushed black for the ground and the lunar disc, reserving crisp brushwork for the textiles and hats. Presented double-matted behind glass in a light oak frame with a ruled black keyline on the mat.
CONDITION
Good, as shown. Presented framed under glass; colors are strong and the sheet is clean within the visible window. Not examined outside the frame.
