Ruth Runyan Panoramic Mesilla Adobe Streetscape — Original Painting on Paper
A panoramic view of a Mesilla, New Mexico street, signed lower right Runyan and attributed to Ruth Runyan, the Las Cruces artist known for her New Mexico sketches and paintings. Flat-roofed adobe pueblo-style structures line a dirt road under a wide blue sky, with bare cottonwoods, a green-planked door, and two small figures walking with a dog. Warm ochres, umbers, and touches of yellow-green scrub give the scene its Mesilla Valley light. Medium is watercolor on paper; Runyan is known to have worked primarily in watercolor and ink.
Mesilla is a historic plaza village adjacent to Las Cruces with deep Spanish Colonial and territorial-era roots, and the subject here — adobe, dirt road, cottonwoods — reads as a genuine document of the valley. Runyan studied at Hastings College in Nebraska, in Denver, and at New Mexico State University, and exhibited in numerous juried shows across New Mexico and El Paso throughout her career. The elongated panoramic format is characteristic of her approach to New Mexico village subjects. Presented in a worm-holed wood frame with cream mat behind UV-protective glass.
CONDITION
Very Good. The painting presents cleanly with strong color. Matting shows staining — light foxing-type spots along the mat window, most noticeable in the lower left area. Housed behind UV glass in a sound wood frame with intentional worm-hole texture.
