Russell Yoshida Ink Drawing — Haleiwa Vegetable Market, Signed & Dated 1982
Pen-and-ink drawing of the Haleiwa Vegetable Market, a two-story wood-frame storefront rendered in dense hatching and cross-hatching that builds the board-and-batten siding, corrugated awning, and shadowed interior. Hand-lettered signage anchors the scene — the market's name and Pepsi placard at left, an "ICE CREAM CONES 15¢ / SHAVE ICE 10¢" board at right — pricing that places the subject in an earlier Hawaii while the sheet itself is dated 1982. Signed and dated in the lower right, Russell Yoshida 5-21-82.
The composition captures a working plantation-era storefront on Oahu's North Shore, with produce tables, benches, and stacked goods visible through the open bay. Yoshida's linework carries the eye from the finely detailed façade out to the loosely drawn foreground planking and grass, a study in controlled ink density. Housed in a bamboo-style frame behind glass.
CONDITION
Good. The drawing presents cleanly with strong, unfaded ink. Frame shows scuffing. Medium is ink on paper.
