Dorris Harrison Black-on-Gray Pueblo Olla Watercolor, Signed & Dated 1980
A tightly composed still-life watercolor by Dorris Harrison, depicting a black-and-gray pueblo-style olla resting on desert ground beneath a bare, spreading branch. The potter's geometric banding — stepped keys, triangles, and vertical hatching — is rendered in crisp black, gray, and white against a warm peach-to-slate wash. Signed and dated in the lower right, Dorris Harrison ©1980. Watercolor on paper, double-matted with a stepped-cut mat and set behind glass in a distressed dark wood frame.
Harrison's handling leans on strong tonal contrast and a restrained palette, letting the graphic pottery motif carry the composition while the leafless branch and mottled foreground add depth. The stepped mat opening echoes the geometry of the painted design — a period framing choice that suits the subject. A ready-to-hang piece scaled for a shelf, entry, or gallery grouping.
CONDITION
Good. Artwork presents clean and bright under glass with strong color. The paper dust-cover backing on the reverse is torn, with losses across the board and hanging wire intact. Frame shows expected wear to the distressed finish.
