Jo Ann Ott "Taos Pueblo" Signed Watercolor — Mesilla Valley Artist
A small-format watercolor of Taos Pueblo by Jo Ann Ott, the Old Mesilla, New Mexico painter behind Jo Ott Designs Gallery and Gifts. The scene captures the multi-story adobe complex under a stippled, atmospheric sky, with the characteristic turquoise-accented doors and windows, roof ladders, dome-shaped hornos, bare cottonwoods, and Native figures in traditional dress gathered in the plaza. Ott worked the paper with a dry, granular touch that gives the walls their sun-baked texture. Signed lower right in ink "JoOtt." The verso carries the title "Taos Pueblo" and a full cursive signature "Jo Ott," with an additional signature on the frame strainer — double documentation uncommon for a work this size.
Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the most painted architectural subjects in American West art, a lineage running back to the Taos Society of Artists. Ott approaches it as a later regional practitioner, translating the Mesilla Valley's landscape tradition into a compact, collectible piece. Presented in a dark distressed wood frame with linen liner and double mat, behind glass.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. The watercolor presents clean and bright within the mat, colors well retained. Frame shows intentional distressing to the finish consistent with its rustic style.
