Primitive Blue-Painted Pine Eight-Drawer Bank — Procter & Gamble Crate Wood
A vintage utilitarian storage bank of eight small drawers arranged in two rows of four, hand-built from repurposed shipping-crate lumber. The case and drawer fronts carry a worn, weathered blue paint, softened to a chalky matte over decades of use, while the thick plank top has lost its paint entirely to bare, silvered wood. The drawers are dovetail-constructed with small turned knobs, sliding within a divided pine carcass. Wear, paint loss, and honest scuffing throughout mark this as a working object, not a showpiece.
The maker economy shows plainly on the drawer sides, where salvaged crate boards retain their original merchant stencils: "PROCTER & GAMBLE — IVORY SOAP — PORT IVORY, S.I., N.Y. — KANSAS CITY, KAN.", the P&G "EST. 1837" moon-and-stars trademark, and a partial "SUNKIST" citrus-crate label. Furniture like this was assembled from whatever lumber a household or shop had on hand — soap and produce crates broken down and reborn as drawers. That secondary use dates and grounds the piece in early-20th-century American thrift, its provenance printed right into the wood.
CONDITION
Good, with age-appropriate wear; authentically rustic and primitive. Blue paint shows heavy loss and chalking; the plank top is worn to bare wood with checking and an old cut-out at one end. All eight drawers are present and slide; joinery is loose in places consistent with age. Rustic by design.
