Description

Mexican Folk Art Hand-Painted Carved Wood Fish, Set of 6

A school of six hand-carved and hand-painted wooden fish from Mexico, in graduated sizes, each finished with bold folk-art color and detailed brushwork. The largest is a striking multi-panel piece — teal body studded with black starbursts, a fanned gold-and-pink midsection, and a deep burgundy tail zone bearing a painted koi motif in white line work, capped by a yellow dorsal fin and red tail. Two mid-size fish follow: one with a blue wave-pattern body and an inset green spotted fish design outlined in gold, the other featuring a radiant sun-face motif with a serene painted countenance at its center.

The trio of small fish round out the lot, each individually patterned — a teal fish with gold flourish, a burgundy-and-yellow striped example, and a coral fish scaled in white crescents with a blue head. Carved detailing on the fins and tails catches the paint, giving each fish dimension. A decorative wall grouping with strong graphic appeal.

CONDITION

Good overall. Visible scuffs and scratches throughout consistent with handling. The large fish's yellow dorsal fin shows a stress crack with a small chip exposing bare wood at the tip, and the burgundy body panel meets the fin with a gap and minor paint loss at the joint. Please review all photos for condition and details.
