Description

Hand-Painted Fireworks Trade Banner, Oil on Canvas — Rolled

There was a version of summer that lived on the roadside. A plywood stand, a card table, a hand-lettered banner strung between two posts — and every kid in a passing car craning their neck to read it. This is one of those banners. FIREWORKS arcs across a smoke-dark slate field in tall red block letters, each one outlined in warm cream and stippled with tiny painted stars — a sign-painter's trick for making letters pop at distance. Six red firecrackers tumble around the composition, fuses lit, throwing loose golden sprays of sparks in confident, gestural strokes. The whole thing was painted fast, painted to be read from a moving car, painted to move product. It worked.

Executed in what reads as oil paint on heavy canvas, with a reinforced hem and brass grommets at the top corners for hanging — purpose-built for seasons of outdoor use, and it shows. The paint has the stiff, layered quality of someone who knew what they were doing with a brush even if they never signed their name to it. Unsigned, unmarked, anonymous — which is exactly right for this tradition. American vernacular signage at its most direct: no ego, no flourish, just a painter doing a job and doing it well. Offered rolled for transport.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear consistent with functional outdoor use. The face shows surface soiling, scattered staining, and localized paint loss; the verso is heavily toned with significant paint bleed-through and general grime throughout. Grommets are intact at all top corners; the canvas remains supple and structurally sound.
