Description

Felt Souvenir Pennant Set of 4 — Salt Lake City, Pocatello, Louisiana, Pensacola

Before the interstate, before the airport, before anyone thought to call it "content," the American road trip ran on pennants. You bought one at the five-and-dime near the depot — thirty cents, maybe forty — rolled it into your suitcase, and pinned it to the wall when you got home. These four felt pennants are exactly that: a small, bright record of mid-century American motion, the kind that gets saved in a box and forgotten for sixty years before somebody finds it and remembers what it felt like to go somewhere for the first time. The colors are still good. The graphics are still sharp. They did not make them better than this.

The navy Salt Lake City pennant anchors the set — yellow binding, blue felt ties, and a screen-printed panorama of Temple Square with the Sea Gull Monument labeled in tiny type, sailboats on the lake behind it. The black Pocatello, Ida. pennant is the standout: a boldly drawn Plains headdress portrait in amber, teal, and white against the dark ground, white binding, red felt ties — and the original J.J. Newberry Co. variety-store stock tag still stitched to the binding, stamped HN 937B with a wholesale pricing line partially blacked out. J.J. Newberry ran as one of the great American five-and-dime chains from 1911 through the 1970s — a direct peer to Woolworth's and Kresge's — and stocked souvenir pennants by the case at travel-destination stores nationwide. That tag is a small, paper document of exactly how mid-century road-trip culture was supplied. The burgundy Louisiana — The Pelican State pennant reads "Greetings From" above a standing pelican, yellow binding and mustard ties. The teal Pensacola Beach, Fla. pennant closes things out with a circular beach vignette: palm tree, reclining figure, turquoise water, white binding, and yellow ties — Pensacola before the condos arrived.

CONDITION

Good with age-appropriate wear across all four. Printed graphics remain bright with minor edge softening and light surface nap wear consistent with storage age. The Newberry paper tag on the Pocatello pennant is intact; the price-code line is partially obscured by an ink smudge but the stock number reads clearly.
