Description

Mid-20th Century Felt Souvenir Pennants & Novelty Cap, Lot of 5

The family road trip used to end with a souvenir — not a refrigerator magnet or a branded tote bag, but a felt pennant nailed to the bedroom wall, proof you'd been somewhere. These four pennants cover an itinerary that reads like a postwar American Grand Tour of the South and Eastern Seaboard: a purple Dallas, Texas with a bucking bronco rider; a rich red Jackson, Miss. with the domed Mississippi State Capitol rising from painted clouds; a stark black Williamsburg, Va. depicting the Royal Governor's Palace and a horse-drawn carriage; and a deep maroon Savannah, Ga. centered on a stately hotel in illustrated color. Each has contrasting gold felt binding at the staff end and original leather-cord hanging ties — the hardware of a medium that ruled American souvenir culture from the late 1930s through the early 1960s.

The fifth piece pushes the lot into conversation-starter territory: a purple felt overseas-style cap with a working top zipper and olive-green lining, its front panel embroidered with a full-headdress profile portrait flanked by arrows, a cross, and diamond symbols. This style of novelty cap was sold at roadside attractions, state fairs, and curio shops across the country — part costume, part souvenir, entirely of its era. The five pieces likely traveled together, assembled at stops along a single family route through the South and Virginia coast, probably in the late 1940s or 1950s. None carry maker marks, which is typical — pennants of this period were produced by regional textile jobbers who supplied destinations wholesale, rarely branding the goods.

CONDITION

Good overall. Colors remain strong on all five pieces with expected felt softening and light surface soiling consistent with age and handling. Minor edge fraying present on some pennants; hanging ties are intact. Cap zipper is present and functional.
