Description

Van Pelt Belgian Teak Two-Piece Bookcase & Cabinet, 1960s–70s

A two-piece modular bookcase and cabinet unit produced by Van Pelt of Belgium during the Scandinavian-influenced export boom of the 1960s–70s. The upper section is an open bookcase with four fully removable and adjustable shelves, framed in teak veneer with bookmatched grain running the back panel. The lower cupboard carries two doors fitted with sculptural turned circular teak pulls — the detail that separates this from the flatter, lower-tier Belgian exports of the era — opening to a single adjustable interior shelf. Rear panels are stamped "MADE IN BELGIUM" with factory assembly-alignment notations and the model code L 2-1, still legible.

Van Pelt built teak casegoods as an accessible alternative to Danish branded furniture, and this unit reads that lineage clearly: warm veneer over composite core, clean vertical proportions, understated hardware. The two-piece format is its practical strength — bookcase and cabinet can be stacked as shown or used independently. Construction is teak veneer over particleboard/composite substrate, with a light birch-tone interior in the lower cabinet. The original factory stamps intact throughout will appeal to provenance-minded buyers.

CONDITION

Very Good and structurally sturdy throughout. Some staining and discoloration to the teak surfaces, including a small mark to one shelf; no remarkable damage. Doors and shelves function as intended.
