Description

Zuni Carved Stone Horse Fetish with Turquoise Offering Bundle

A Zuni horse fetish carved from a warm salmon-pink stone with a contrasting black-and-tan mineral hindquarter, the natural color break used to define the animal's body. Incised lines suggest the mane along the neck, and a small inset turquoise cabochon forms the eye. A turquoise stone is bound to the back as an offering bundle, secured with wrapped sinew.

Among the Zuni, animal fetishes embody spirit and confer protection or good fortune, with the horse associated with strength, endurance, and travel. The bound turquoise bundle follows traditional practice — a stone offering placed to honor and empower the carving. This is a pocket-scale piece of the kind carried or kept close rather than displayed at distance.

CONDITION

Good with no remarkable damage. Age-appropriate surface wear to the stone; the sinew binding remains intact and holds the turquoise bundle securely. Minor mineral variation and small dark inclusions are natural to the material.
