Large 19th Century Hand-Formed Copper Cauldron with Iron Ring Handles
A substantial cylindrical copper vessel built from hand-formed sheet, joined with a lapped and dovetailed vertical seam along the wall and a folded, brazed seam securing the base disc. Two forged iron ring handles hang from riveted copper mounts set at the rim on opposing sides. The rolled top edge stiffens the mouth, and the seams show the peened, hammered work of a coppersmith rather than machine production. Unmarked.
Vessels of this scale and construction served dairy, brewing, and general farmstead work through the 19th and early 20th centuries, where copper's even heat transfer made it the metal of choice for boiling and rendering. Today the deep, warm surface and generous proportions make it equally at home as a hearthside log bin, oversized planter, or standing display piece.
CONDITION
Good. The polished copper shows scratches, minor denting, and finish wear consistent with age and use throughout the walls.
