Federal-Style Flame Mahogany Dining Table & 8 Shield-Back Chairs, 2 Leaves
A nine-piece Hepplewhite-revival dining suite in flame mahogany, comprising an extending pedestal table and a set of eight shield-back chairs — six side chairs and two arm (captain's) chairs. The serpentine-shaped top opens on a wooden slide mechanism to accept two 16" leaves, carried on an octagonal pedestal over a shaped quadripartite platform with casters and two additional swing-out gate legs turned and reeded for support. Book-matched flame-grain veneer runs the apron, finished with a gadrooned edge molding.
The chairs carry the classic shield back with a carved wheat-sheaf and drapery splat, raised on turned and reeded front legs joined by H-stretchers. Seats are upholstered in green vinyl (unmarked). The suite draws directly on the Hepplewhite vocabulary popularized in American Colonial Revival dining rooms from the 1930s through the 1950s — a durable, formal set built for a family table that expands for company.
CONDITION
Good throughout with age-appropriate wear. Scuffing, scratches, chipping, and finish wear and loss are present across the table and chairs. Vinyl seats show handling wear. Slide mechanism and gate legs operate; leaves included.
